Child advocacy center to be named for slain child

Wheaton, Ill.(AP) -- A new children's advocacy center in suburban Chicago will be named in memory of a 10-year-old girl who was murdered in 1983.
The dedication of the Jeanine Nicarico Children's Advocacy Center is Tuesday in Wheaton. The idea is to provide a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary response to abuse allegations.
DuPage County officials have said the honor is to pay tribute to the difference Nicarico's death made in the criminal justice system.
Nicarico was kidnapped from her suburban home, raped and murdered. In 2009, Brian Dugan pleaded guilty and is serving life in prison.
However, before that two other suspects were wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death before being exonerated. Former Gov. George Ryan has said the case was one that led to his decision to stop all Illinois executions in 2000.
