Saturday prep sports roundup

Marquette 7, Herscher 4
HERSCHER, Ill. – Trystin Raikes homered on the first two pitches he saw, and Patrick Killelea added another long ball as Marquette claimed its third sectional championship in five seasons, beating Herscher 7-4.

Raikes’ moonshot set the tone for Marquette (31-6), who put their first five batters aboard to chase Herscher starting pitcher Tyler Fisher before the sophomore could record an out. Bryce Hinkelman ripped an RBI single and C.J. Norman added a two-bagger to plate another run and end Fisher’s day, then John Lechtenberg added an RBI single off Brady Hansen to put the Crusaders up 5-0 before the Tigers stepped to the plate.

Marquette then opened the second inning with back-to-back homers from Raikes and Killelea on the first two pitches of the inning to make it 7-0, and it looked as if the Herscher Sectional championship could turn into a laugher. But Marquette failed to find the scoreboard again as the Tiger pitching staff found its footing, and the game would turn interesting in the final innings.

Killelea (9-1) started strong, retiring the first nine hitters. Herscher got a run back in the fourth inning on Easton Haase’s RBI double, then took advantage of three Killelea walks to chase the senior righthander and scratch another run across on a wild pitch.

Down 7-2 with just three outs remaining, Herscher put together a two-out rally, pushing runs across on a Tyler Verona wild pitch and a Luke Azzarelli single. Marquette head coach Todd Hopkins signaled for Evan Snyder, who struck out Haase looking to end the ballgame and set off a wild celebration near the Crusaders’ dugout.

The Crusaders will face Westmont in Monday’s Benedictine Super-Sectional. First pitch from Lisle is set for 7:00.

Somonauk 6, Gardner-South Wilmington 2
GARDNER, Ill. – Dominant all season, Somonauk showed its muscle with a five-run sixth inning to beat Gardner-South Wilmington 6-2 and win the Gardner Sectional championship.

Liah Frederick went 2-for-3 and singled home a run in the decisive sixth inning to put Somonauk (23-4) in front. Nicole Krupp added three hits, one of them a triple, and plated two runs for the Lady Bobcats, and Mackenzie Jackson added two hits and two RBIs for Somonauk.

Bailee Krantz struck out ten over six innings to win the first sectional title for the Somonauk softball program. Krupp worked the final inning to seal the victory.

Somonauk will face West Prairie on Monday in Normal. First pitch will be at 4:30.
