Substitute teachers don't have to pay for their own background checks yet

Ottawa -- Gov. Pat Quinn has sent a bill on substitute teachers back to the General Assembly with an amendatory veto. Quinn wants the bill requiring subs to pay for their own background checks to take effect January first instead of immediately upon signing.
LaSalle County Regional Schools Superintendent Rich Myers is okay with that. He says maybe the bill can be tweaked this fall, perhaps to require new subs to go through orientation.

Myers says it’ll make them better, more employable teachers.
