1929 – 2012
Harriet Morehead, 82, of Ottawa, passed away Sunday morning, August 5, 2012, at the Ottawa Pavilion.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2012, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with the Rev. Dr. David Esterline, officiating. Interment will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum at Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the funeral home.
Harriet was born on December 10, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Illinois. Harriet graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Psychology and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital as a floor nurse and then as the Supervisor of LPN Training. She married Don E. Morehead on July 15, 1956, and they moved to Ottawa in 1959.
Harriet worked as a nurse at the Community Hospital of Ottawa from 1972-1981. She helped start the Intensive Care Unit in 1972. She also helped start the Mental Health Inpatient Unit in 1974. Harriet was head nurse of the medical-surgical floor from 1976-1981.
Harriet was involved in numerous volunteer organizations. She served two terms as President of Ryburn Hospital Auxiliary. Harriet was President of the LaSalle County Medical Society Auxiliary for one term. She was a board member of the Easter Seals and was President during the construction of the current Easter Seal Center building. Harriet was one of the founders of the Community Hospital of Ottawa’s ReRuns resale shop. She also served on the board of Reddick Library. In 2005, Harriet received the 7500 hours pin from the Community Hospital of Ottawa Auxiliary. In addition, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, the Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Deer Park Country Club Ladies Bridge, and several other bridge clubs.
Harriet is survived by her husband of 56 years, Don, of Ottawa; one son, David (Diane) Morehead of Morgantown, NJ; two daughters, Judith (Keith) Olson of Bolingbrook and Susan (Greg) Gaynes of Naperville; eleven grandchildren, Andrea Morehead, Carl Morehead, Don Morehead, Margaret Morehead, Laura Morehead, Kristen (Steve) Schnackel, Brian Olson, Kevin Olson, Bradley Andries, Patrick Andries, and Daniel Gaynes; and one brother, John (Margaret Mary) Bush of Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Harriet was preceded in death by her mother and father, Harriet Mae (Doyle) Bush and Harold Lockley Bush.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
