Springfield, Ill. -- Unemployment is up with a vengeance. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports a 13.5% unemployment rate in January, up from 10.8% in December. After-Christmas layoffs may bear the brunt of the short term blame.
For the long term, the department says there are 375 fewer retail jobs in LaSalle County since a year ago, 175 fewer government jobs, and 225 less other non-farm jobs.
The transportation-warehousing-utilities sector added 200, leisure-hospitality added 150, and other services added 175.
The January numbers mean about one in seven people who want to work are out of work.
