Plan to prohibit polling places in schools bigger issue in some counties

Ottawa, Ill. -- LaSalle County Clerk JoAnn Carretto doesn’t use many schools for polling places anymore. So it won’t be a big problem for her if Illinois lawmakers prohibit polling places in schools.

But some counties use a lot of schools because they don’t have other buildings with easy public access to choose from for voting. The General Assembly is talking about whether to prohibit schools as polling places because someone with a gun could have easy access to schools on Election Day.
It’s not a new issue though. Some alternative proposals over the years have included not having school on Election Day and moving Election Day to Saturday.
