OHS deficit budget affected by hospitals' charity care
Ottawa, Ill. -- An Illinois law adopted last year lets hospitals reduce their property taxes by the amount of charity care they provide. The amounts provided by St. Elizabeth Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center are costing Ottawa High School $227,000. Supt. Matt Winchester says it caught school districts by surprise.
The school board Monday night adopted a budget with $15.1 million in revenue and $17.9 million in expenses for the new budget year. Winchester says the $2.8 million will come from the working cash bond fund.
After this school year, big cuts will have to be made if the financial situation doesn’t turn around, because the working cash bond fund is almost empty.
