Building inspections blown off, City Hall wants crackdown
Ottawa, Ill. -- Ottawa city officials want to do something about builders blowing off required city inspections at construction sites. Building and Zoning Official Mike Sutfin says some contractors are good about it, calling often, and building to code. He says quite a lot are having some inspections and skipping others.
Sutfin estimates the 100 or more building inspections done every month are only about half the number they should be.
The City Council talked about possible solutions during a special meeting Thursday. They may include charging late inspection fees and ordering a halt to construction. Those would require City Council action putting them into ordinance.
