Federal government denies operating dam improperly during flooding
Chicago -- The federal government has filed its defense in the court case over who, if anyone, caused flooding in Marseilles. Hundreds of property owners think Ingram Barge is to blame for losing control of seven barges that hit the dam in the Illinois River on April 18.
Ingram Barge says it lost control of the barges, in part, because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers didn’t control the Marseilles dam like it said it would. The government’s court documents filed Friday deny the accusation.
A lawsuit involving Ingram already includes a complaint from the federal government demanding that Ingram pay for dam repairs. The barge company has already filed documents denying that it caused the flooding.
