Ottawa ordinance allows for lower awnings

Ottawa, Ill. -- Ottawa has updated its awning ordinance. Mayor Bob Eschbach says a lot of building owners who want to put up awnings have had to ask the city for a variance. Their doors are seven feet tall. City ordinance said awnings must be at least nine feet high. Eschbach says that didn't work right.
So the updated ordinance says the minimum awning height is now seven-and-a-half feet.
Not as many building owners will have to ask for variances now. And the city benefits by not having to process as many requests.
