Braceville, Chicago natives win first Starved Rock Country marathon

OTTAWA, Ill.--Josh Rogowski crossed the finish line at Heritage Harbor more than three minutes ahead of his closest competitor to win the first Starved Rock Country Marathon.

Rogowski, 28, of Braceville finished with a time of 2 hours, 55 minutes, 2 seconds. His time was 2:21 better than Jeff King of Kewanee, who placed second. Tom Smith of Peru finished third, 27 seconds behind King.

Julie Speck was the women's champion, running to victory with a time of 3:37:40. The 40-year-old from Chicago crossed the line 1:51 quicker than second-place Margaret Cheker of Naperville. Michelle Lenahan of Evansville, Ind. placed third.

Earlier in the day, Marisa Hird of Naperville won the half-marathon in a time of 1:18:50. Hird, 27, bested the men's champion, Neil Nicholson, 34, of Aurora, by 59 seconds.

Kelly Bergan won the the Four Miles for Smiles run put on by the Ottawa Noon Rotary. Molly Burns of Chicago was the first female finisher.

In other marathon results:
  • Ottawa's Sarah Monroe won the female 25-29 age group.
  • Chad Kovash of Marseilles was fastest in the 40-44 classification.
  • Susie Walsh of Ottawa won the female 45-49 group.
  • Richard Mangold of Ottawa was the first finisher in the 55-59 age group.
In other half-marathon results:
  • Ottawa residents swept the 30-34 age group. Sean Manley was the best finisher while Kim Sedlock was the fastest woman.
  • Kim Eddy of Ottawa won the female 50-54 class.
  • Mechthild Ferguson of Ottawa was the best female finisher in the 55-59 age group.
