Wednesday prep sports roundup

BASEBALL
St. Francis 7, Sandwich 1

PLANO, Ill. – St. Francis silenced the Sandwich bats Wednesday and cruised to a 7-1 victory in the IHSA Class 3A Plano Regional semifinals.

Austin Smith had the lone hit for Sandwich in the fourth inning, shortly after Bailey Watros was hit by a pitch. Watros came around to score, but the Indians managed just two more baserunners the rest of the game.

St. Francis did most of its damage with two outs. Brett Whelton worked a two-out walk in the first inning and Christian Kuzemka was hit by an 0-2 pitch before Christopher Smith and Jake Radel followed with back-to-back singles to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Whelton led off with a single, then watched as Kuzemka and Smith struck out. Needing an out to escape the jam, the Indians instead saw the next five batters reach as the Spartans plated four more to go ahead 6-0 and put the game out of reach.

Sandwich ends the season 12-16-1.

Morris 2, Ottawa 1
The Pirates' season came to an end with a 12-18 record despite outstanding pitching in both regional playoff games. Morris advances to the Class 3A Morris Regional championship. They will face the winner of Thursday's semifinal between LaSalle-Peru and Coal City.

SOFTBALL
Ottawa 9, LaSalle-Peru 2
While LaSalle-Peru got the better of Ottawa twice in the regular season, the Lady Pirates had the last laugh with a rout of their archrivals. Ottawa advances to face Morris in the Class 3A Morris Regional final on Saturday.

Somonauk, Luther North
Rain ended the Class 1A Gardner Sectional semifinal before it began. The game will be played Thursday to decide who will face Gardner-South Wilmington in Saturday's sectional championship.
