NEW YORK (AP) — Carmelo Anthony will be available when the NBA's free-agent signing period begins July 1. A person with knowledge of the details says the New York Knicks forward filed the paperwork on Friday to opt out of his current contract and test the free-agent market. Teams such as Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Miami have been mentioned as potential suitors for the two-time Olympic gold medalist who led the NBA in scoring in 2012-13.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The struggling San Diego Padres have fired general manager Josh Byrnes. The Padres are 32-43 and 12 1/2 games out of first in the NL West. They finished 76-86 in each of Byrnes' first two seasons in the position.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Carl Edwards held off a strong challenge from Jeff Gordon on the final lap to win yesterday's Sprint Cup race at Sonoma, Calif. It was Edwards' first career victory on a road course and ended Hendrick Motorsports' five-race winning streak. Grdon finished second, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard.

UNDATED (AP) — Michelle Wie has earned her first major championship by finishing two shots ahead of Stacy Lewis at the U.S. Women's Open. Kevin Streelman was the winner of the PGA's Travelers Championship, shooting a final round 6-under-64 to complete play at 15-under-par. Tom Lehman birdied three of the last four holes, including the 18th, to finish one shot in front of Michael Allen at Kirk Triplett at the Encompass Championship.
