Washington, DC -- Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson (D-Crete) is calling on New York Congressman Charlie Rangel to step down as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Rangel was accused Thursday by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct of failure to report foreign vacation property rental income on his original tax returns. He’s also accused of not reporting more than $600,000 in assets on his Congressional financial disclosure statements.
Halvorson says she passed along Rangel’s contributions to her campaign to various charitable causes in her district during the first quarter, including the Youth Service Bureau based in Ottawa.
Adam Kinzinger (R-Bloomington), who’s after Halvorson’s seat, says she could do better. He claims Halvorson has given up less than a third of Rangel’s contributions and that Rangel helped her raise more than $40,000 in additional money.
